“A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul.”
― Charles H. Spurgeon
Charles H. Spurgeon was a man who understood the love of God in a way that was earth shaking. Not one word that he ever spoke about Jesus was void of passion. Not one second of his life after finding Jesus was ever wasted on moments without Him. He loved Jesus with every fiber of his being. Plain and simple. He read this passage “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”-Mathew 22:37 and lived it out. Instead of skimming over it and writing it off as a poetic sentence of unrealistic words woven together, like most of us have probably done. Because, lets be honest, in the beginning it is hard to imagine giving up so much of our will power and need for control and to allow ourselves to fall madly in love with Jesus. We are all afraid of love. Especially of being completely taken over by love. So imagining loving Jesus to the amount that He becomes our heart, our soul, our mind, our breath and our very being seems to be an impossible task to most. Yet, this is what we were made to do. We were made to love Jesus so much that He becomes the very essence of our lives. The rock on which we stand. The eyes through which we see. Our souls were made to be engulfed in His love. Our hearts were made to be His. Our breath was sweetly crafted by Him to give us a life to live for Him. And still, He reached down in His mercy and gave us a choice. And Charles H. Spurgeon made a choice. He made the choice to die to himself and to live for Jesus. “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”-Philippians 1:21. His example has carried on through the ages. His sermons and writings never fail to completely incapsulate my soul whenever I read them. They bring scripture to life, and they help me to understand Jesus in a way that I didn’t before.
Friends, Jesus is life. He is love, He is mercy, He is grace, He is hope and He is joy. Lets throw our fear of love out the window and fall so madly in love with Jesus that we can’t even remember what our world was like before Him. Lets give up our selfish need for control and trust the Man who crafted our souls and so sweetly gave us a future filled with hope. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. There is no other life besides Him…. Only a string of moments that will mean nothing in the end unless we decide to make them about Him. Lets invite Him to take over these wretched souls of ours. It will be the best decision we will ever make.
